Excited and delighted are two adjectives that I would use to describe how I feel about school year 2016-2017.

I’m delighted because the administration, faculty and staff are all returning with a renewed sense of pride and purpose. What I know is that we are sincerely looking to make this school year the absolute best for all students and stakeholders. We have clear eye views on where we want to go and what it will take to get there, and it will require the help of everyone who has a stake in the life of Dunbar and the students it serves.

I’m excited because as the Principal at Dunbar, I have another year to make an indelible mark on tomorrow’s leaders. We know that there is no students nor alumni like Dunbar’s. When our Poets arrive and when they leave, the expectation for competence, clarity and commitment is well placed. That’s why I know that each year as another class reaches that universal milestone--graduation, we have to do right by them. The stakes have never been higher and the demands are ever increasing. And that’s why I’m also excited to announce that this year, Dunbar will be one of two select schools to offer a brand new opportunity that makes college more of a reality to our students.

What I’m referring to is P-TECH. It stands for: Pathways in Technology Early College High School (see link: http://hub.jhu.edu/2015/11/23/p-tech-baltimore-anouncement/). In addition, our students will have the benefits of our ongoing relationship with Johns Hopkins in the Dunbar-Hopkins Health partnership and two federally funded 21st century ALIVE programs and the engagement of our advisory board who prepared our freshmen through the Reginald F. Lewis Pre-Scholars program.

I’m confident that Dunbar has what is necessary to make our Poets competitive global citizens. This is the year that we will find solutions for every area that needs improvement and the year that every Poet experiences a truly rich and rigorous education that carries the spirit and pride of Dunbar amongst leaders capable of delivering with dedication, determination and dependability; the Dunbar way!

Dear City Schools Staff, Families and Partners,

I want to take this opportunity to tell you how honored and happy I am to serve as the new Chief Executive Officer of Baltimore City Public Schools. As a Baltimore City resident and a proud City Schools mother, I am committed to our mission of providing all of Baltimore’s students with the knowledge and support they need to be successful and fulfill their purpose.

I recognize the challenges we face, and I realize the amount of work that needs to be done. At the same time, I know that we have the full support of the Board, our elected officials, our families, and every person of good will in the City of Baltimore. I have full confidence in the dedication and commitment of our classroom teachers, school leaders, and the staff of City Schools. Most importantly, I have no doubt in the ability of our students to excel.

Our children cannot wait, and we cannot allow any obstacle to stand in their way. We have this moment to do this work, but we can only succeed if we commit ourselves – as a school system, as a community, as a city – to work together with single-minded purpose for the benefit of our students. They deserve the best that we have to give, in order to prepare them to realize the excellence that each and every one of them is capable of achieving.

I am grateful and humbled by the opportunity to return to Baltimore City Public Schools, and I look forward to helping our children develop the skills to be successful in school and throughout their lives. I invite your collaboration, and I thank you for your support and active engagement in this great work.
