Stonington Institute began serving people who struggle with alcoholism and addictions in 1957 as Starlight Farms. The main campus in North Stonington was operated as a fruit and vegetable farm by a WWII fighter pilot who lived on the property with his family until his children left the farm. The property was sold to a neighbor who was among the founders of the AA movement in Connecticut and who created a program where alcoholics could work the farm and learn the 12 Steps.

This rich tradition of 12 Step-based recovery continues to be the cornerstone of Stonington’s treatment programs. On this foundation, Stonington has built programs that treat alcoholism, drug addiction, PTSD, and co-occurring mental health issues that so often complicate lasting recovery for the individual and family. Military program for active duty and veterans for substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Our mission — to provide superior behavioral healthcare services — begins and ends with the individual needs of each person who seeks treatment in one of our programs. To this end, our programs are based on a belief that recovery is about helping each person understand the spiritual, psychological and physical aspects of addiction and using proven treatment methods to help each person who walks through our door to… Rediscover Life. “I can not believe how much my life has changed in such a short period of time. Although still very new in recovery, I am convinced that I will stay committed to my sobriety, which has been nothing short of remarkable. I also wanted to express how excellent the program really is for those who are serious about recovery. Your staff were very instrumental in helping me in many ways.”
