CEO and Director of Admissions

Kevin comes to Ocean Recovery as a recovered user. His own personal and tumultuous journey through addiction and into recovery has led him to want to help change the lives of those who are currently struggling with substance abuse. He is currently the main point of contact for any and all individuals looking to start their recovery. During the admissions process, Kevin ensures that potential clients are properly suited for Ocean Recovery, that they are aware of the individual care and attention they will receive during their stay and that they feel comfortable knowing the many safety protocols that the program takes to ensure a flawless stay. He makes sure potential clients truly understand what Ocean Recovery does and doesn’t do so that families can establish a healthy sense of hope for their loved one’s recovery. In true east-coaster fashion, Kevin always stays crystal clear in his communication with clients to promote positive, life-changing repertoire. After working his way up in the field of addiction recovery, Kevin is now truly satisfied in his position, as he loves what he does and feels honored to be a part of Ocean Recovery.

Kathy is the Executive Director of Ocean Recovery and has 28 years experience in the field of addiction treatment. She received her Master’s degree in Counseling from California State University Long Beach, and since then, has worked hands-on to provide each and every one of her patients with a bright future. She believes that treatment doesn’t define the patient’s life, only alters it, and so she helps them make those positive changes by promoting a well-rounded continuum of care. She has developed numerous family programs designed to assist the whole family towards recovery, as well as worked extensively with individuals who are dually diagnosed. At Ocean Recovery, she and the staff pride themselves on never missing a thing and spotting when a patient is about to relapse and/or stop treatment. Kathy offers a therapeutic program in conjunction with a gender-specific addiction treatment approach that help both men and women achieve sobriety and restructure their lives with the help of Ocean Recovery.

Jenn is a Marriage and Family Therapist at Ocean Recovery and earned her Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Southern California. She is experienced in the areas of trauma-focused CBT, drug addiction and child development, and has worked closely with the LGBT community. Jenn is determined to help her clients obtain a full recovery and believes that her determination helps clients stay determined as well. Her genuine approach allows clients to become more open and honest with her, and she enjoys working with clients because she knows that they have the strength and capability of getting better if they are willing to do so. Much of her experience was obtained from working at the CLARE Foundation Recovery Center in Santa Monica and the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center. She is also trained in working with families and adolescents from her experience at the Community Family Guidance Center in Cerritos. At Ocean Recovery, Jenn serves as the case manager for the women’s facility, and she is dedicated to using her compassion and empathy to help her clients find success in their sobriety.

Grace joined Ocean Recovery in 2004 as an individual therapist, but has been in practice as a marriage and family therapist for over 30 years. She is mostly driven in her role as a therapist because her own personal recovery has given her life, one that she describes as worth living and sharing. She specializes in addiction medicine, codependency and adult children of alcoholics (ACA) issues. She feels that if families want their loved ones to have the best chance at recovery, that they should send them to a place such as Ocean Recovery where they know that recovery can happen. In addition to her work at Ocean Recovery and at her private practice in Palos Verdes, Grace is also the Chairman of the Board on the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence in California and previously served as the president of the Association of Marriage and Family Therapists of the South Bay region.

Peg has over 20 years of experience in the field of chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders and now currently focuses her therapeutic energy on treating multiple addictions as well as utilizing both cognitive behavioral therapy and body-centered therapies. She is dedicated to the use of technology to help keep families of loved ones in recovery connected and does not allow geography to be used as an excuse to not stay involved in addiction treatment. Peg stays inspired in her role by watching clients start to fully understand how their issues have kept them locked in place and begin working towards developing a willingness to change their behaviors. She continues to help treat numerous individuals suffering from multiple addictions, including sexual addiction and compulsivity. Peg is also a supervisor for therapists completing the training process developed by Patrick Carnes, PhD.

Jason has over 20 years experience working in the field of chemical dependency and addiction counseling, including his own personal experience in recovery. His own path to sobriety inspired him to dedicate his life to passing along the message of Alcoholics Anonymous, and finds unique ways to reach out to the clients to build rapport with them. His calm demeanor allows him to be patient while his clients go through the recovery process, which he helps encourage by following up with clients, finding out how they are doing and what areas of their program they might be struggling with. Jason is instrumental in endorsing the principles of the 12 Steps, and has experience working as a case manager with clients in inpatient, outpatient and day-treatment settings. He is currently the case manager for the men’s facility at Ocean Recovery and is committed to service, an essential component of the AA program.

Brian has been working in the field of chemical dependency treatment since 2005, and currently serves as the Clinical Supervisor of Ocean Recovery. He received his Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from California State University Long Beach. His primary passion is working with clients to resume academic pursuits in sobriety. He is devoted to helping both men and women re-enter into college post-treatment, obtain their GED’s and more. He is most committed to seeing his clients walk across the stage at their graduations. Brian makes sure that before these successes can occur, that his clients are stabilized in their coping skills and ready to create an overall baseline of stability. Brian also champions family participation in his work, as he feels parents can develop common ground to help aid in their child’s recovery. Prior to his work at Ocean Recovery, Brian served as an MFT Intern with VA Hospital Long Beach/CSU Long Beach’s trauma treatment study where he provided treatment in both Exposure-Based Therapy and Cognitive-Experiential Reprocessing.

Dr. Bellman is an Orange County based psychiatrist who owns his own private practice but also work with clients at Ocean Recovery. He completed his training at New York University Medical Center in 2001, and has served as a lecturer and consultant at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. He also consults at assisted living facilities and is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Orange County Psychiatric Society. Dr. Bellman feels strongly that Ocean Recovery has a particular niche with 18-30 year-olds whose addiction has interfered with a true launch into adulthood. By working closely, compassionately and consistently with both addicts and their families, Dr. Bellman enjoys helping encourage love and boundaries that are rarely found in other treatment centers. He believes that to fully recover, clients need to build caring relationships with people who simultaneously do not tolerate behavior consistent with their addiction. Dr. Bellman feels that the single biggest failure in treatment providers is the lack of commitment to one treatment episode, and is proud of the fact that both he and the team at Ocean Recovery are determined to provide that commitment to all of their clients while they work towards their full recovery.

Sherry is the Program Nutritionist for the Residential Extended Care and Outpatient Program and focuses primarily on helping people struggling with eating disorders overcome their challenges. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Hunter College in New York City and went on to work at Columbia University.s Psychiatric Institute in the Eating Disorder Research Unit. At Ocean Recovery, Sherry strives to bring equilibrium to her patients transitioning into treatment, and works to broaden their experiences with food and eating as they move forward in their recovery. She feels that it is a joy to watch patients become courageous enough to battle their fears and begin enjoying life. In addition to her work at Ocean Recovery, Sherry is also a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, The Academy of Eating Disorders, The American Dietetic Association, The American College of Sport Medicine and The American Anorexia and Bulimia Association.

Colleen has been working in the field of mental health and addiction for over 15 years, and has devoted her professional life to helping individuals support their hopes for a sober, fulfilling lifestyle. Prior to serving as the Marketing Director at Ocean Recovery, Colleen worked inpatient care, as well as an Assistant Director of Intake/Admissions and Business Development both within the country and abroad. Shortly after that, Frances joined Ocean Recovery and has been with us for the past year.   Frances has a Bachelor’s in psychology as well as a Master’s in Counseling from National University. With her educational background combined with her field experience, Frances is a great addition to our team, often serving as a jack-of-all-trades. Collin understands what a financial burden paying for treatment can be, so he works hard, so that paying for treatment is one less obstacle families have to think about when they are going through the struggles of getting a loved one in treatment.

“I have dedicated my life to helping young adults overcome addictions and eating disorders. Treatment starts with having a dedicated team who cares as much about your success as you do. ”

- Kathy Tunney, Executive Director

With that being said, we work together as an unshakeable team to provide you with this kind of outcome. We understand how important it is to you and your loved ones that you remain sober for the rest of your life, so we are dedicated to providing you with all the right tools so you can do just that. We know first hand how difficult maintaining sobriety can be, which is why we vow to apply all of our expertise and compassion to helping you keep your life on a positive path.

To encourage your overall, wholesome recovery, our facility is located on the water in Newport Beach, California. It is here that we have treated thousands of clients, and hope to do the same for you. We are not a traditional rehab program, rather an extended care program where we put all of our focus into helping you prevent relapse and reshape your lifestyle to accommodate your newfound sobriety. Our clients come to us after going through primary treatment for 15-30 days, and then stay with us for an additional 90 days. However, our care does not end there, as we often encourage the continuation of treatment at a sober living home after 90 days has been completed.

We are truly different at Ocean Recovery, not only because a large portion of us have faced addiction head-on from a personal standpoint, but because we are dedicated to making each step of your process as easy as possible. As a result, we offer a free consultation with one of our many addiction treatment professionals who will help you understand our program as well as make you feel comfortable in your current state. We will also help guide you to make important life decisions after your stay with us, including assisting you in placement at a sober living home and/or with additional services that will keep you on the road to recovery.

It is our philosophy to provide the utmost, hands-on care possible for both you and your loved ones. Therefore, we maintain a staff of highly trained and qualified individuals, as well as stay up to date on the most effective techniques in addiction treatment. To us, addiction treatment is more than going to meetings and attending therapy sessions, rather it is about gaining a new outlook on life. We know that you can be successful at Ocean Recovery, and we look forward to being able to celebrate your many successes with you.

We know that even though you have already gone through some treatment, that reaching out for more help is still a challenge. That's why all we ask of you is to make that first call—the one that will connect you with us and in turn, your continued sobriety. Once you reach out to us, we can begin making your admissions process quick and painless.

Our intake specialists are the first people you are going to come in contact with once you decide that you are ready for more care. These specialists, some recovering addicts themselves, will talk with you about your many options pertaining to finances, insurance and more. There are many ways to pay for treatment, and our specialists are ready and determined to help find a plan that works best for you at the time of admission.

Our intake specialists don't just stop there. They are also dedicated to helping you find the care you need, even if it is not at our program. In the event that this occurs, our intake specialist will work with you and reference our resources to find the best fit for your current needs.

We understand how stressful it can be to go through the admissions process. There are hundreds of questions running through your head, never mind the many concerns you might have about how recovery will impact your personal life. Please know that each and every member of our staff is ready and willing to provide you with answers to your questions, as well as make you feel comfortable and prepared for your next steps.

At Ocean Recovery, we know that it takes more than just one method of care to treat your specific needs, which is why we offer a variety of different programs, all of which are gender-specific and geared towards particular areas of concern. With these programs, all the members of our staff aim to help you build a lifetime of freedom from active addiction. Through your participation in these programs and development of a partnership with our staff, you will be given all the tools necessary to do just that. The programs that we offer at Ocean Recovery include:

At Ocean Recovery, we know how eating disorders can not only threaten your quality of life, but also threaten your sobriety. Therefore, we do everything we can to address any and all disordered eating problems that you might have, all while simultaneously treating your chemical dependency issues, too. It is our goal to provide you with a safe, nurturing environment where you can heal at your own pace. It is here that we encourage you to build a healthy relationship with food, as well as the coping skills needed to overcome substance abuse.

One of the greatest benefits of the individual sessions program is that you will be able to work with your primary counselor on a weekly basis. This counselor will get to know everything about you, and will help guide you towards a successful recovery. The primary goal of these sessions is to help you uncover why you struggle with addiction and work on incorporating health coping skills into your newly recovered life.

We understand that you need more than just weekly individual therapy sessions to get all of your emotions out, so we encourage your participation is psycho-educational groups. These groups are provided so you can learn as much as possible about addiction, as well as work on your communication style. Each week these groups will focus on different topics that are related to chemical dependency and mental/physical health issues, which are designed to encourage you to share your stories, relate to others experiences and ask questions.

We want to prepare you for life outside our four walls, and by engaging in process group, you will be encouraged to set goals for yourself, reflect on those goals, take personal inventory and develop skill sets designed to help you actively hold yourself accountable for your personal goals.

We know how complicated and complex it can be to work through one or more traumatic experiences. Therefore, we have designed a program to specifically address the many consequences that result from trauma such as substance abuse, disordered eating, impulsivity, mood disturbances and other compulsive behaviors. Your trauma can cause you to subconsciously put up walls that prevent you from healing, so we are determined to help you break down those walls with many forms of therapy, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which can help you move past this point in your life in a healthy manner.

Our relapse prevention program is geared towards preventing you from relapsing in your newly recovered life as you move forward from our program. It is here that you will work with members of our staff who will help you focus your energy on identifying your triggers and learning how to cope with them.

We know that as a result of your substance abuse or co-occurring disorder, that one of the areas in your life that likely suffered the most was the relationships with your family and/or loved ones. Through your participation in our family and relationship education group, you will begin exploring new ways of communication that will aid in the reestablishment of past relationships as well as the development of future relationships. We encourage family participation in this group so you can work directly with your loved ones to begin the overall recovery process.

We appreciate and respect our alumni community for all the effort and hard work they have put into their recovery, which is why we hold weekly meals and meetings to keep our alumni group connected to each other, as well as connected to you. We continue our love and respect for our alumni through this program and hope that you will eventually become a part of this program after your treatment is completed.

Following in our philosophy to give you the very best care possible, we at Ocean Recovery are constantly keep up with the newest and most effective forms of treatment available, which makes us one of the most cutting edge extended care programs. We know that you need more than just one-on-one counseling sessions to maintain your sobriety, which is why we work hard to provide you with a dynamic yet effective treatment process. Our treatment teams will work with you to determine a unique treatment plan based on your specific needs. Through our Multi-Dimensional Therapeutic approach (MDT), we have developed a detailed program that has proven to yield great success amongst our clients.

When you begin your treatment process with us, we will start by doing a thorough assessment and evaluation of your current state, which will not only help us get to know you, but also prepare the best form of care possible for you. This assessment and evaluation will include the following:

We value the benefits of both individual counseling and group treatment, which is why we encourage you to participate in a little bit of both. With individual counseling, you will work hands on with many of our licensed therapists, one of which will become your primary treatment counselor. This is a great opportunity to bond with your counselor, as you will partner up to address your patterns of behavior, evaluate your goals and prepare to reintegrate back into the real world after your time spent with us.

In addition to individual counseling, you will participate in group treatment, where at least two of your therapists will be present to help guide skills development amongst the group. The skills you will be adopting will include the following:

By offering different educational groups for you to participate in, we can help encourage your success by helping you gain a better understanding of addiction as well as what it takes to live life in recovery. Some of the groups that you will get the opportunity to participate in will include:

We want to see you succeed, and want to be a part of your success as well. Therefore, we incorporate the many different forms of the treatment process into your individualized treatment plan so you can develop skills, handle outstanding personal issues, build stronger communication skills and learn how to prevent relapse as you move back into your normal routine. With our continual help, your individual treatment plan will help you better understand your disease, support your willingness to change and encourage your commitment to recovery.

At Ocean Recovery, we know that it is not always easy going through therapy in a mixed gender setting. We understand that you have personal issues that you would rather discuss in the company of other men rather than women, and we respect that desire. As a result, we have designed our gender-specific men's program to help you address multiple issues that pertain specifically to you as a man. Whether your biggest concerns lie in your substance abuse or in your mental disorder, we are here to provide you with a comfortable setting to get your emotions surrounding your troubles in order.

When you enter into our men's program, you will be working with many members of the staff including professionals and counselors to target your complications with your most pressing issues. In addition, you will be able to engage in a therapeutic process amongst other men with shared experiences, which can help provide you with benefits that include:

In addition to the benefits of the men's program, you will also be invited to participate in multiple groups and activities that we have specifically designed to help promote your overall healing. These activities can include:

We respect your desire to recover amongst your male peers who can understand what you are going through. Through your participation in our men's program, we will maintain 24/7 supervision as well as the support you need to solidify your recovery.

As a woman, we know that you respond much differently to specific forms of treatment than men do, which is why we are more than happy to provide you with our women's program. Through this gender-specific program, we are able to design the perfect setting for you to handle the issues at your own pace, and without the judgment of the opposite sex.

Some of the most common issues that we see in our female clients include alcoholism, drug addiction, eating disorders, mood disorders, sex/love addiction, self-harm and co-dependency issues. To help tackle these complex issues, we maintain a strong understanding that your biological, psychological and environmental influences are different than those of another female's, helping us provide you with the unique care you deserve.

Even though our women's program is different than the men's program, there are some basic benefits that are shared between the two programs. Through your participation in the women's program, you have the opportunity to obtain some of the many benefits of this process, including:

We feel that you deserve the most well-rounded treatment experience, which is why we not only help you obtain these many benefits, but also encourage you to participate in the numerous activities that we offer as a part of our women's program. Some of the activities available include:

The entire women's program is dedicated to providing you with the most safe, nurturing environment possible so you can successfully accomplish the many goals you have set for yourself in order to maintain your sobriety. Through your determination and our efforts to continually support your journey, your participation in the women's program can help you establish your lifelong recovery.

We understand how important it is to develop an individualized treatment plan for your unique situation. As a result, we work with you personally to customize the best plan possible to help you maintain positive behaviors. Not only will we work to determine the most effective activities for you to participate in throughout the week, but we will also connect you to support groups, help you prepare and shop for meals, and engage in dinner outings. In addition to these individualized steps, we will also work with you as you make your way through the basic components of our eating disorder treatment, which include:

We know how overwhelming it can be to even think about continuing your eating disorder/substance abuse treatment, however we encourage you to put in a call to us so we can start taking some of the burden off of you. With your determination and our dedication to help you maintain your health and sobriety, your participation in this program can be life changing.
