To promote the General Welfare of Children, Youth, and Families in Grady and Caddo Counties through an agency that administers social services that are designed to facilitate individual, family, and community growth; to implement programs that prevent juvenile delinquency; and to provide alternatives for the diversion of troubled children and youth from the Juvenile Justice System.

Youth Services of Grady County was organized as a non-profit corporation in 1972. Our first office was located in the basement of the Grady County Courthouse. In 1974, the office was expanded to the “Old Hospital”. An Emergency Children’s Shelter was opened in January, 1975. A major capital campaign led to the construction of the new Children’s Shelter and Family Service Center at 198 East Almar Drive in Chickasha, OK. On May 15, 1990, the agency opened under the new name Southwest Youth and Family Services, Inc., registered as a not-for-profit 501(C)3.Growth, did not end with the expansion in Grady County. In 1986, services extended into Caddo County through the school system. By 1999, Anadarko’s former Opera House had been purchased and renovated. In 2008, a new Administrative building was constructed on the Chickasha Campus. The building uniquely reflects arts and crafts design and contains the Nancy Osborn Conference Room.Though Southwest Youth and Family Services, Inc. maintains its license with the Department of Human Services as a Children’s Shelter, the Emergency Youth Shelter was closed on June 30, 2010, with a sense of sadness and an attitude of anticipation. Sadness, because an important part of our founding purpose changed and is not needed at this time. In addition, a lack of funding, in fact, decreased funding, jeopardized all of our programs. At the same time, decreased utilization of our shelter created a fundamental need to reevaluate and reallocate our resources to serve the maximum number of children in our communities. We are excited about serving many more kids through the reallocation of resources. The results will be the strengthening of families by implementing programs of a preventive nature while lowering the individual cost of services. At the same time, we will be partnering with state agencies and the public school systems to multiply the impact of available resources.
