To provide comprehensive primary health care services based upon identified community needs, to individuals and families that otherwise would not have access to this care, regardless of ability to pay.

Heart of Kansas Family Health Care formerly known as The We Care Project was started 1989 when a community-wide task force was formed to look at the needs of the medically underserved in Barton and Pawnee Counties. The We Care Project, Inc. was the result of the task force study. Using a voucher system and the generosity of the local physicians those patients unable to pay full price for their medical care were treated with limited services.

Today Heart of Kansas is a Federally Qualified Health Care (FQHC) Clinic providing family health and behavioral care services to all ages of residents in Central Kansas.

All insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and Farm Worker Program participants are accepted. A sliding scale of discounted fees is available to those who qualify.  Your costs are based upon your income level and the number of people in your household.

Our History In 2000, We Care received its first State grant allowing the addition of a nurse practitioner, Jackie Reed, with services covering the three counties of Barton, Pawnee and Stafford. A Federal Grant was received in September of 2001 creating a growth of services, an unlimited scope of service area and the addition of employees. This growth made it necessary to find larger facilities to accommodate the increase hence the move from 12th street to its present location at 19th and Kansas. 2003 also marked the hiring of the first medical directorOur Name In 2009 the name was changed from The We Care Project to Heart of Kansas Family Health Care to better identify the services the clinic provides. Heart of Kansas is a family practice primary care clinic with two medical providers, Nurse practitioners Jackie Reed and Malorie Hamlin. Carie Brown, LSCSW and Robin Schneider, LSCSW provide behavioral services for Heart of Kansas patients. Other services include a registered dietician, Debbie Tillitson; a diabetic educator, Alicia Bordier and monthly Spanish and English diabetes support groups along with full time bilingual employees.Cutting Edge Heart of Kansas is taking the lead in the health industry by implementing electronic medical records which not only captures the patients’ health information, the clinic has a full time quality program for the measurement of hypertension, diabetes and obesity. The requirement to capture over 50 health measurements is part of the government program referred to as Meaningful Use.
