The Milestones Program addresses substance abuse issues of adolescents between the ages of 13-17. The program works to develop strategies to living a life without drugs. The program lasts eight to sixteen weeks depending on the individual’s needs and treatment process and is a combination of both individual and group sessions. Each referred adolescent is evaluated and a treatment plan is developed. The evaluation covers potential problem areas, such as, health, education, relationships, legal and mental health. Program services are offered once a week at the LPSO Community Corrections Campus.

Once a client is active in Milestones the adolescent requirements include one weekly 30 minute individual counseling session, one weekly (1) hour group counseling session, and weekly drug screens. The parent/guardian requirements include participation in the initial evaluation (noted above), responsibility for the adolescent transportation to required sessions, and availability for a family session to be scheduled prior to the adolescent completion of the Milestones program.

Parent/guardian will also be consulted if the adolescent Level of Care recommendation is adjusted due to continued substance abuse. For example, if an adolescent is not successful with progress leading to sustained elimination of substance abuse in the Milestones outpatient treatment program, the counselor may recommend referral to intensive outpatient or inpatient treatment to ensure best clinical treatment

The sessions which are over a three to four month period are conducted at home. FFT is a strength-based model that focuses on those risk and protective factors that impact the adolescent and his or her environment, both inside and outside the family. The program is constructed around an intervention program consisting of five major components in addition to pretreatment activities: The three phases of the model are:
