Medicaid Expansion is now a reality in Louisiana. July 1, 2016 marked the first day that adults who have enrolled in expanded income eligibility requirements for Medicaid were able to start using their new coverage to pay for care. On his first full day in office last January, Gov. John Bel Edwards signed an executive order to make Medicaid available to more than 375,000 adults living in Louisiana who previously did not qualify for coverage.
