Johnson County Mental Health Center offers a wide range of mental health and substance abuse services to residents. The Mental Health Center serves as a safety net for individuals with the most severe forms of mental illness, as well as those who are unable to afford or access care elsewhere in the community.

Like physical illnesses, mental illness shows itself in a variety of ways. Depending on the situation’s seriousness, a variety of treatment options are available. We provide services throughout the county with highly trained and compassionate professionals.

“I do feel positive about the new secretary,” said Tim DeWeese, director of the Johnson County Mental Health Center. “It seems that he has a genuine desire to take care of the Kansans that need this (mental health) service that are most at risk.” - See more at: http://www.khi.org/news/article/kdads-secretary-making-progress-at-osawatomie-state-hospital#sthash.LmHeWY1Y.dpuf

Kansas officials say Osawatomie State Hospital has made significant improvements since federal inspectors deemed it unsafe in December 2015, but mental health providers say the state needs to examine its entire system to avoid a future crisis. -

Police departments in Johnson County each year answer hundreds of calls involving people who are having mental health crises or substance abuse problems.

In the past, many of those calls ended with the person headed to jail or taken to a hospital emergency room.

But under a newly expanded program through the Johnson County Mental Health Center, 13 Johnson County cities will soon have mental health professionals on call who can come to the scene of these emergencies, keep situations from escalating and help the people get the psychiatric or counseling assistance they needed.

County commissioners earlier this month signed off on hiring a mental health “co-responder” to work with police departments in nine northeast Johnson County communities.

More than 800 adults and children will lose mental health services with Wyandot Inc. because of budget cuts announced Wednesday.

Losses in revenue combined with Gov. Sam Brownback’s decision earlier this year to cut Medicaid reimbursement by 4 percent compelled the move, said Wyandot president and CEO Randy Callstrom.

“We’ve done what we can to preserve treatment,” Callstrom said, “but there have been too many cuts to provide (the same level of) services.”

Funding cuts to mental health services in Kansas have spawned layoffs at some of the state’s 26 health centers, many of them positions that help families in crisis manage day-to-day care, mental health advocates say.
