The grass is greening and a new path has been poured across most of the green space at the new Manning Regional Healthcare Center Family Garden at the Plaza facility. As crews continue to work on developing this, and fundraising efforts keep on, the Family Garden is beginning to take shape.

“We’re excited to see this project come to fruition. This is going to be a great space for our Plaza residents, their friends and family, and the community of Manning as a whole,” says Alyson Bornhoft, Plaza administrator.

In total, estimates for the Family Garden project top $30,000. To make things manageable, the project is being approached in three-phases, breaking the total cost of the project into $10,000 increments. The first phase has been completed, with the rolling of the green space ground, seeding and watering, and pouring the main through-way sidewalk and center circular sidewalk. This was completed with $5,000 in grant funds from the Community Foundation of Carroll County and matching funds from Manning Regional Healthcare Center.

In July, the West Central Iowa Healthcare Foundation hosted its 23rd Annual Charity Golf Classic at the M&M Golf Course, raising nearly $10,000 in funds which will also go toward the Family Garden project. These funds will complete the second phase of garden construction, which consists of pouring concrete for the main patio area for residents and planting the larger trees set for the green space area. Phase two should be completed this fall.

Long-term goals for this area include several mobility-impaired and wheelchair friendly walk-ways, sitting benches, picnic tables, gardens and bird houses. The park would be constructed to meet state regulations for long-term care facilities. With its immediate proximity to the Plaza, all residents will have the opportunity to utilize the park. Visiting families will also have immediate access to the park for family gatherings. MRHC’s long-term care activities department can utilize this space for resident programs including group picnics, tailgating festivities, happy hours, gardening activities, bird watching, animal therapy visits and more. Outdoor activities can also be incorporated into each resident’s care plan goals and personalized wellness plan. Neighboring residents would be able to enjoy park benefits as well.

Fundraising efforts for this project continue. Anyone interested in making a donation can contact Sarah Foley, WCIHF director, at (712) 655-8121 or [email protected]. Currently, opportunities exist for the sponsorship of any one of the three main flower beds planned for the area, as well as a couple of the larger trees and picnic tables. Flower bed sponsorship’s are available for $500 and will include a personalized name plaque recognizing the donor. Two large maple trees are available for sponsorship for $300 and will also include a personalized name plaque recognizing the donor. Handicap accessible picnic tables and umbrellas may also be sponsored for $1,500 and will again have donor recognition placed them. Benches will be available for sponsorship, however those are not available at this time.

Congratulations on becoming a parent. It is a very joyous and exciting journey, but at the same time, you may feel nervous about what to expect. At Manning Regional Healthcare Center, we want to help you through the labor and delivery process by offering prenatal classes to help you prepare for your new arrival.

To schedule a prenatal class, please call Jackie Blackwell, RN and OB Coordinator, at (712) 655-8167 to schedule a class.

During the class, we spend time discussing a wide variety of topics: from what to pack for the hospital, when to come to the hospital, what to expect during labor and how to take care of yourself and your new baby after delivery.

Snacks and beverages are provided, along with samples and handouts with helpful information for you to take home. The cost for the class is $25 per couple. We look forward to seeing you there.
