Welcome to the website for South Central Alabama Mental Health Center. The magnitude of mental illness in this country is staggering. According to the Surgeon General, one in every five Americans experiences a mental disorder in any given year and half of all Americans have such disorders at some time in their lives. These illnesses of the brain affect all of us, regardless of age, gender, economic status or ethnicity. Mental illness affects the mind, body and spirit. It is a real, common and treatable illness. Mental illnesses are far more common than cancer, diabetes, heart disease or arthritis.
In spite of the fact that research continues to demonstrate that the right treatment can be effective in improving the symptoms associated with these disorders, nearly two-thirds of all people with diagnosable mental conditions do not seek treatment. The cost of care and the stigma still surrounding both mental illness and substance abuse disorders prompts many people to hide their symptoms and avoid treatment. South Central Alabama Mental Health Center has been meeting the behavioral health needs of Butler, Crenshaw, Covington, and Coffee counties since 1968. With principles founded in recovery, the dedicated staff of South Central Alabama Mental Health provide a comprehensive and integrated system of community based programs and services.
We hope you find our web site helpful in your recovery journey or in your efforts to provide support to someone you care about. Please take advantage of the ways to contact us available throughout this website. Thank you for your interest and please let us know if we can serve you in anyway.
