UI Hospitals and Clinics

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is dedicated to offering care and hope to all substance abusing patients; meeting the special needs of dual diagnosis patients; and providing resources to other clinical departments, the general university community, and the state of Iowa.

Our integrated, multi-disciplinary team of physicians, nurses, substance abuse counselors, substance abuse social workers, occupational therapists, and recreational therapists work together to provide the most flexible and complete care for patients with substance abuse and/or mental health issues.

Our programs combine professional care and self-help approaches with an emphasis on abstinence, family participation, relapse prevention, and health promotion.

We provide a full range of outpatient services for adults who want to address their addiction and regain control over their lives.

The Dual Diagnosis Track in the Partial Hospital provides care to individuals who have either a medical or mental illness in combination with an addiction. Individuals participate in structured therapy programs during the day and spend nights at home. Our professional staff develops an individualized treatment plan that includes both individual and group therapy as well as medication management. Services are designed to help individuals readjust to community life and/or move into less structured outpatient programs. The program meets five days a week from 9 am to 3 pm.

Individuals with substance use disorders have the option of receiving outpatient treatment three evenings a week from 5:30 to 8:30 pm through our Intensive Outpatient Program. The Intensive Outpatient Program is designed to aggressively address substance use disorders while allowing individuals to maintain a job and live at home. Treatment plans are individualized and involve some combination of individual, group, and family therapy.

The Extended Outpatient Program provides comprehensive evaluations (including OWI evaluations) and therapy options (individual, group, family, pharmacotherapy) for individuals with substance use disorders that focus on addiction problems, relapse prevention, and coping skills. Individuals learn about the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of addictive behaviors.

The Professional Program is designed to meet the special needs of professionals with substance use disorders. Services include individual and group therapy, UA testing, and assistance managing various professional-licensing board requirements.

A full spectrum of outpatient services are available for collage-age students twice a week from 3 to 4 pm through STOP. This program promotes healthy, low-risk behaviors and responsible decision making concerning the use of alcohol and other drugs.

A variety of services are offered to provide continued support in recovery.

Assessment and consultations services are provided to patients on inpatient units. If indicated, a referral is made to a licensed provider for substance abuse treatment. Treatment resources can be found at the Iowa Substance Abuse Information Center.
