Established in 1965, the Fellowship House is a Non-Profit Agency funded primarily by the United Way, donations, the Alabama Department of Mental Health, and sliding-scale fees. The house provides a substance abuse recovery program designed to serve the special needs of an individual who suffers from alcoholism, drug addiction and co-occurring disorders.

Our goal is to aid the individual in the personal, social and vocational adjustment necessary for the maintenance of a sober and productive life.

The Medium Intensity Residential program provides a structured and supportive environment for men and women who are unable to achieve and maintain recovery in an outpatient or home setting. All treatment plans are individualized in a cooperative effort between clients and their Clinical Team Leaders, based on the strengths, goals and needs of each person, with the overall goal of functioning in recovery outside of the treatment center. Necessarily, the treatment team includes classes, case management, group and individual counseling, peer support, medication management, housing planning, vocational counseling, and continuing care coordination. Length of stay is not predetermined, but is continuously evaluated throughout treatment and based on individual needs and treatment resources.

The transitional program assists with further developing the self-discipline and independent living skills necessary for living outside of institutions. These needs are addressed through case management, group counseling, and engagement in the community. In the low intensity transitional program, clients share financial responsibilities with their roommates. Clients remain involved by serving as mentors for newer residents and participating in group activities, such as an Open House for family and friends, and potluck gatherings. A primary goal of this program is to provide stable living environment, sober living experience, and recovery support until each individual is prepared to move to a more independent setting.

The purpose of the Family Program is to provide information, peer support, and referral resources for family members of individuals seeking addiction and co-occurring treatment at Fellowship House, Inc. A Recovery Oriented System of Care includes empowering family members to support each other and their respective loved ones in recovery, and to advocate for addiction and co-occurring recovery needs. Family events, such as 'Back to School" parties, an annual Talent Show, and holiday gatherings, are used to engage sober, positive interactions between clients, family and supportive friends.

The Pretreatment program's purpose is to provide quick access to supportive services for applicants. Classes on what different levels of treatment are, how this is relevant, and goal clarification are provided onsite weekly as well as at partner agencies in the local community. Also, Pretreatment case management and peer support specialists are used to assist with individual needs. This is an opportunity for the person seeking help for alcoholism, addiction or a dual diagnosis to explore their options and needs, and to get referral assistance if needed.

Fellowship House's emphasis on co-occuring disorders (COD) evolved in the mid 1990’s, in response to the demand for residential treatment for addicted AND mentally ill individuals. These are clients diagnosed with alcohol or drug dependence, and also with a serious mental illness such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, or schizophrenia. The biggest barrier to treatment for this population is mainly that their addiction interfered with mental health treatment and their mental illness interfered with addiction treatment. At Fellowship House, COD clients can work with their treatment team on effective medication management, developing a personal recovery support system, and participate in dual recovery self-help meetings, such as Double Trouble.

Your financial donation to Fellowship House can assist with purchasing client medication, basic needs, and other necessities that keep our agency running.

People coming into the Fellowship House often enter with little to no personal resources and basic necessities. Some of the items that we commonly need are toiletries, over the counter medication, cleaning supplies, and clothes washing detergent.
