Welcome to the website for East Alabama Mental Health Center. We provide services for persons with mental illness, substance abuse problems, and intellectual disabilities. It is our vision to provide a continuum of comprehensive, outcome-oriented, and cost effective services to the residents of Lee, Russell, Chambers, and Tallapoosa counties. We strive for these services to be driven by consumer and family needs and to be readily accessible, and continuously improving. We are here as a public safety net for persons who need us.

Our website is designed to provide information about our services, factual information about the diseases and disabilities we serve, applying for employment, or accessing information posted for our employees. You can also find recent news and awards received by our excellent staff. We hope you will find it user friendly, up-to-date, and convenient.

Mental illness continues to rank second (only behind cardiovascular disorder) in burden of disease rankings. When combined with substance abuse disorders, mental illness is the leading cause of worker disability. One in every 5 people will experience a diagnosable mental disorder in a year. Persons with mental illness die on average 25 years sooner than someone without the disease. But there is hope. Today we have effective medications and evidenced based treatment techniques for treatment of both mental illness and substance abuse. People can and do recover every day and go on to live productive, meaningful, lives they enjoy. Persons with intellectual disabilities learn new skills and are able to live as independently as possible in the community.

We understand that it is often scary to seek services for mental illness or substance abuse problems, and sometimes hard to locate services for persons with intellectual disabilities. We will do everything we can to make this experience a positive one for you or your family member. It is our goal to be a team member in your recovery journey. Our services are paid for by fees based upon income and/or public and private insurance carriers. To begin services, contact our access to services number listed above.

It is my honor to lead a staff of about 425 dedicated staff members to deliver services to consumers and their families. People who work at our Center do so because they believe in our mission to assist consumers with achieving their goals. It is not simply a ?job? to work at our center but rather more of a ?calling?. It is a joy to be a part of the changing lives of persons who receive our services. If you think you might be interested in joining our team click on the employment area of our website to view open positions or to apply. For those already on our team we have a new ?employee?s only? section which will contain useful information. If you have suggestions on what you would like to have in this section please contact our webmaster Jimmie Dickey.

I hope you will find some useful links on our website to provide information about mental illness, substance abuse and intellectual and other developmental disabilities. You will also find links to some of our community and statewide partners. We hope this information will be helpful to consumers and their families and to those who are seeking information to help prevent problems.

I am proud to have completed 36 years of service with the Center and pledge to you that we will continue to seek to improve our excellent system of care.
