The natural beauty of our 177 acre campus, our state of the art facilities and decades of experience provide lasting healing to those suffering from addiction

Cumberland Heights is a nonprofit alcohol and drug treatment center located on the banks of the Cumberland River. The natural beauty of our 177 acre campus, our state of the art facilities and decades of experience provide lasting healing to those suffering from addiction.

We believe in the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, which, since 1935, is a proven method to become clean and sober. The worldwide growth of AA cannot be denied, despite its traditions of no leadership or outside funding.  AA’s only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. Practicing its steps can result in an immeasurable freedom.

Cumberland Heights is for those who need more. We start with the 12 Steps, yet we go further. A patient’s treatment plan includes an assigned counselor and a small, gender-specific group with whom trust becomes natural.

In 1965, Nashville businessman Robert Crichton, Sr. traveled many miles from his home to receive treatment for alcoholism. Alcoholism carried a taboo then, and good treatment centers were hard to find. Inspired, he called a friend, prominent physician Thomas F. Frist, Sr., to see about starting a treatment center in Tennessee – not as a business, for profit, but as a service to the many who needed help and had no place to turn. Soon after, the Cumberland Heights Foundation was born.

Cumberland Heights began admitting men for treatment in 1966 and became the first treatment center of its kind in the southeast. In the 1970s, we opened one of the nation’s first treatment programs for women and by 1985 saw the advent of one of the first adolescent programs.

Today, by staying true to its goal, Cumberland Heights has become one of the leading treatment centers in the country.

At Cumberland Heights, the patient’s whole recovery of body, mind and spirit is our number one priority.
