The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Dental Clinic (formerly Madre Angela Dental Clinic) is a collaborative program sponsored by Columbia St. Mary's (CSM) to provide oral health care to people who are unable to access dental or hygiene care elsewhere in the community. As medical science is discovering the connection of oral health to systemic health, particularly in areas of cardiovascular health, management of diabetes, improvement of maternal health and pediatric health, Seton Dental Clinic is positioned to support health through multiple programs.

Urgent Dental Care: Many people without insurance or those with only BadgerCare insurance find it difficult to receive treatment for urgent dental needs. Emergency Departments, for the most part, are only able to offer pain-relief or swelling relief medications without being able to treat the underlying problem. Supported by Delta Dental of Wisconsin, the clinic offers Urgent Care each weekday morning to treat dental pain, bleeding and swelling.

Restorative Care: Assisting people without insurance or those with BadgerCare who cannot access a dentist, Seton works with community partners to bring their patients to full oral health. Partners include free community clinics and non-profit organizations assisting people in rehabilitation and housing stability. This program is supported through the generosity of the United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha.

Smart Smiles School-based Oral Health: The greatest cause of health related school absenteeism is dental caries. In Milwaukee schools, as many as 30% of children have untreated dental caries. These cavities impact school attendance and performance as well as a child’s overall health. Dental sealants are an evidence-based response to prevent cavities in a child’s molars and fluoride treatments help to prevent cavities in other teeth. The Smart Smiles program treats thousands of children in Milwaukee schools. For more information click here.

Pediatric Dental Care: While providing preventive oral health through the Smart Smiles program, hygienists discover many children with untreated dental caries and often with dental emergencies. The hygienists and an oral health advocate work to help families get dental care for these children. Too often, they are unable to find care through community providers and refer children to Seton’s dentists to provide urgent or restorative care, funded through the generosity of the United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha.

Prenatal Oral Health: Physicians agree that a woman’s health during pregnancy is important for both the mother and infant. Evidence shows that a mother’s oral health has direct impact on the future oral health of the infant. Poor oral health can result in inflammation and infection that impacts the health of a pregnant woman. Unfortunately, in Milwaukee County, only 20% of women covered by BadgerCare receive oral health care in the year prior to delivering an infant. Seton Dental Clinic works with health partners to bring pregnant women to full oral health before their labor and delivery.

In FY 2015, Seton Dental Clinic provided 20,570 oral health encounters in the community and clinic as described in the Annual Program Report.

An important goal for the future is the development of integrated diabetes and oral health care. Science has shown that people with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease and that those with periodontal disease have a more difficult task of managing diabetes. Seton Dental Clinic has developed a pilot program with the CSM Family Health Center to integrate oral health into the clinic to improve diabetes care results.
