What is a substance use disorder?
This is a maladaptive pattern of substance use. This pattern causes significant impairment or distress. This pattern involves tolerance, withdrawal, substance taken in larger amounts than intended, unsuccessful attempts to cut down or stop use, excessive time spent to obtain and use the substance, important other activities are given up or reduced due to substance use (including failure to meet major obligations at work, school, or home), recurring use in situations in which it is physically hazardous, continued use despite knowledge of physical or psychological problems due to the substance use (including recurring social or interpersonal problems related to use), and persistent craving for the substance in its absence.
Comprehensive evaluations (following ASAM placement criteria) and a spectrum of individualized treatments are available for Veterans with Substance use Disorders, including the following:
• Individual and group outpatient treatment (at WRJ VAMC, FEA and Bennington CBOCs)• Opioid agonist treatment with Suboxone (at WRJ VAMC and FEA CBOC)• Residential Treatment (at the WRJ Residential Treatment Center, a six week program offering multidisciplinary treatment substance use disorders and co-occurring mental illness)• Medical treatment for acute withdrawal syndromes from alcohol, sedative/hypnotics, and opiates at WRJ VAMC• Integrated services with the homeless program providing grant and per diem housing in sober shelters, sober supported group housing, and residential treatment programs
